SOD VS. SEED

There are several reasons that sod works better than seed. Sod provides instant beauty and maturity without the usual time-consuming undertaking of seeding.

Many people believe sod, seed and hydroseed are equivilent. Sod will provide 4 weeks what it takes seed or hydroseed a year or more to produce.

Here are a few reasons to choose sod over seed:

Sod is a mature plant. We grow our turf for 18-24 months before harvesting and transplanting it to its new home.

Sod prevents the mud factor. Customers with children or pets especially benefit from installing sod. Sod is the easy solution to minimizing tracked-in mud to your house. An immature yard may appear green but does not provide the mud buffer that a thick matting of mature sod will create.

Sod stops washouts. Washouts and ruts make for a bumpy lawn surface if the dirt is not smoothed out again. Not only are you creating more work for yourself in the long run, but you are also setting yourself up for mowing and maintaining a bumpy lawn. Unfortunately we experience some pretty heavy rains in this area, but rest assured, your sod will stay in place and look beautiful when the storm has passed by. Your seed...well.....not so good!

Sod saves time. Because sod is a mature plant, it needs little attention. Two to four weeks is the common amount of time for rooting. Your sod will need to be well watered for this time, but you won't have the worry of weeds taking control of your new lawn or the neighbor dog running through your newly seeded front yard and ruining any chance of growth!

Sod saves $$$. Expenses for water, herbicides, insecticides and fertilizer - all the grass growing aids - are always a factor. Allowing prefessionals to take care of these initial applications will save you money.

Sod avoids herbicides (in many cases). Popular support of environmental conservation includes using a minimal amount of herbicides, fungicides and other chemicals.

Sod is easy to grow. This is especially true for poor soils. If beginning a lawn with seed, top quality soils re needed to start the plants off right. Fertilizer and water management become critical when you start from seed on poor soils. It takes more fertilizations to start seed.

Sod is instant! We call it "instant grassification!" No hassle. No nurturing. No wait.

Sod is affordable. Sod is actually cheaper than it used to be. THe initial cost of sod may be greater than seed or hydroseed, but when you add up the cost of having to re-prep, re-seed and te headaches of washouts, ruts, and not being able to use your yard, the cost for turf may even be less.
